The Yankees

Why are the yankees in last place?!? Seriously, what gives? I can only imagine what this will do to free trade! A falling hegemon means more restrictions to trade, the yankees are/were a hegemonic power (in baseball), therefore less trade.

It gets worse for Yankee patriots: there is a striking correlation between the performance of the New York Yankees and the Yankees (that is, the U.S.A) in general. Beginning with the emergence of the U.S. as a leading power in the Babe Ruth era, a rough time as the country went into Depression after Ruth retired and Gehrig passed away, through the glorious post-war years of economic growth and Mickey Mantle in the 1950s and 1960s, to slowdowns in the economy and in RBIs (and skyrocketing inflation and earned run averages) in the early 1970s to the roaring 1990s booms of dot-coms and Jeter. (And now others will note that the Yankees have not won the World Series since September 11.)

Does this mean it's unpatriotic to root against the Yankees? Congress needs to fix our country by forcing trades that give the Yankees players like Pujols, Santana, Howard, and Reyes. Maybe Congress can give Clemens $1B to sign with the Yanks for the rest of the year.....

Well, guess Congress didn't need to step in to put Clemens on the Yankees. Just saw that....

Well, at least now I have one positive to fall back on when, as the St. Paul Press and SI already have reported! Johan Santana will get about $25-$28 mil when he signs with the Yankees after 2008.
